A yarn guide 3 is normally reciprocated over the axial length of the interior of a container 1 by a bracket 4 on a rail 5 guided by lifter spindles 7 suspended from chains 15 attached to chain pulleys, such as 14. The chain pulleys 14 are mounted on a sleeve 13 freely journalled on a rock shaft 12 oscillated by a builder motion to bring about reciprocation of the guide 3. The sleeve 13 is driven in one sense only by a lost motion drive that comprises a collar 16 adjustably carried by the shaft 12 and having a pin 17 that in one direction of oscillation engages a pin 18 carried by a chain pulley 14. Secured to the sleeve 13 is a collar carrying a pin that is adapted to be held by a latch operated by a pedal 25 through a rod 19. Depression of the pedal 25 causes the sleeve 13 to be held against rotation for at least the greater part of its arc of movement so as to cause the yarn guide 3 to be temporarily stopped in an elevated position and its further reciprocation to be confined to a small portion of the axial length of the container. With the yarn guide so arranged, a span of thread may be inserted in the guide to initiate winding onto the bobbin.
