FLAT STRIPS 0F MATERIAL.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that L'JOHN SWANYZY 'HAR-j Waltham Abbey,'in the county of Essex; England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in or Relating to the Production "of Yarn; Twine, Cord, and'the like by Spinning or Twisting Flat Strips of Material, ofwhich the following is specification? ,1.
This invention relates .to the. production of yarn, twine, cord and the like by spinning or twisting fiat strips of materialas',"
for instance, paper. j r
' According to the-invention the flat strip of material is' drawn from areelor-bobbin' of the material, whichgreel ior bobbin is "rotated about an axis at rightangles to the ax is'about which the reel or bobbin is caused t'o rotate by drawing off the strip material either directly through a. die of suchdiameter that the spun product is fri'ctiona'lly gripped by the die'or firstthrough a uidewhich may be, in the form of a tube. 7
The die which ordinarily is of somewhat less diameter than the spun product may be rotated and is arranged at a suitable distance from the bobbin.
As exemplifying the sizes of dies which may be employed in accordance with the invention, in spinning paper strip the following particulars are given Paper.

advance of; theihollow spindle, a 'die. of T somewhat lessjdiameter than, the finished;
vided with a bell mouth serving to direct the spindle,
cord may be arranged.
As illustrating the. proportions which it Y has been found that the partsreferred to may have, the following particulars are given e In spinninga single strip of paper of 96 width. the die or constricted portion of the min; in width or two strips of 4:8 mm. in
spindle maybe three'ei'ghths of an inch in iameter'and one half an inch in length.
may have a diameter of a V the distance between the .7
The second die constriction and the die may be two feet.
7 Certain constructions in accordance with the invention are illustrated by way of ex ample inthe accompanying drawings in which :Z
Figure 1 is a side elevation of partly in section; V- i Fig. 2 isa. diagrammatic planview of a frame provided with spindles on each side.
Fig. 3 is a front elevation partly in section of a portion of the machine.
Figs4, 5 and 6 are scale illustrating a means for securing the dle. V p I In the drawings, 1 is the reel or bobbin,.2 the strip material thereon, 3 the carrier. for the bobbin; or reel, 4 the spindle which views 'on a larger i 5 bobbin or reel in association with thespin- I a machine I V passes, 14 a traversing the constructions illustrated by 1 to 6 V is fixed tothe carrier 3, is hollow and is provided with a constriction and a bell mouth 6. 7 is the bearing for the spindle, 8 a sprocket adapted to rotate the spindle by means of a chain from. the sprocket 9, 10 is a die secured in the carrier 11, 12 is a purchase drum, 13 a pulley over which the cord up the yarn, twine or cord in a suitable manner on the bobbin 15,
- by the arm 16' pivoted at 17 against. the
rotating drum 18.
Inthe operation of the machine as illustrated in Figs.16, the strip material is drawn fromthe bobbin 1 through the hollow spindle 4 tion by'means of the sprockets 8 and 9 and the chain cooperating therewith to "the die I 7 1i on to the bobbin 10, the relative rotation of the bobbinl and the lie 10, which is effected in this way, will cause the strip'material to be spun or twisted, the purchase drum 12-about which t the strip material is wound one or more times, operatingto draw the material off the bobbin and through the die, From the purchase drum the V spun material passes over the pulley Bend the traversing device 15 which being pressedthe rotating drum 18 by thearm 16 against is driven by friction therefrom.
The die 10, it may be mentioned, performs a double function, in that it arrests the twist or spin and also'serves to standardize, smooth or perfect the cord, twine or yarn produced. 7
device adapted to lay 1 which is pressed which is maintained in rota- V strip material is drawn A suitable method of mounting the reel or bobbin of paper in the carrier is shown in Figs. 4, 5 and 6, in which 1 is a spindle on which the bobbin 1 is rotatably mounted,
the spindle being provided with squared ends 1 by which it is secured in the eyes 3 of the carrier 3.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is i V An apparatus for the production of yarn, twine, cord and the like comprising a bearing, a tubular member rotatably mounted in said bearing and provided with legs, a shaft carried by said legs and arranged perpendicularly to the axis of the tubular memher, a bobbin carrying strip material mountdesigned to arrest the rotation of the strip and to compress the cord formed from the strip 1 material. I 7
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
