Abstract
665,346. Liquid-fuel burners. PEREGRINE, E. P., and PARSONS & MARINE ENGINEERING TURBINE RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATION. March 18, 1949 [March 25, 1948], No. 8829/48. Class 75(i) In a burner provided with means enabling a fluid fuel sprayer to be replaced without interrupting the combustion in a combustion chamber the arrangement is such that a replacement sprayer head is slid along a guide member, disposed across the air flow path, into abutment with an operating sprayer head so that the spray from both heads communicates with the com. bustion chamber through an aper. ture both heads are then subsequently moved to a position whereby only the nozzle from the replacement head communicates with the combustion chamber and the replaced head is removed. An outer casing b houses a cylindrical member c which encloses a combustion space a and, by means of a spider f, supports a transverse guide member e within which fuel sprayer heads g and g<SP>1</SP> are slidably mounted and a disc o provided with an aperture p is rotatably mounted. In normal operation head g, pressed against disc o by a cam r, operated by a lever q, sprays fuel from a nozzle h, arranged as near as possible to face v of the head g, into the combustion chamber a through aperture p. In order to replace head g a replacement head g<SP>1</SP> is moved into abutment with head g, cam r is moved to free head g and to enable disc o to be rotated by a lever 22 and racks and pinion 25 and 23, to a position in which the major axis of aperture p lies parallel to the axis of member e; thereupon heads g and g<SP>1</SP> are moved to a position where head g contacts a stop 27 and both nozzles h and h<SP>1</SP> are open to the combustion chamber a; fuel is then supplied to nozzle h<SP>1</SP> which is ignited by flames from nozzle h after which fuel to nozzle h is cut off disc o rotated 90 degrees and lever q operated to move cam r into a position to press head g<SP>1</SP> against disc o and to move stop 27 out of engagement with head g which is then removed. Nozzles h, h<SP>1</SP> are positioned centrally of aperture p when in the vertical position, Fig. 5, two lugs w, w<SP>1</SP> bearing against the side of cam r. A stop 28 is provided to serve the same purpose as stop 27 when head g<SP>1</SP> is to be replaced by head g. The heads may each be provided with one connection, Fig. 13, two connections, Figs. 15, 15, (not shown) or three connections, Figs. 1, 4, which latter comprises a fuel feed pipe k, a fuel discharge pipe m and a spill pipe n connected to flexible pipes t and valves u, Fig. 2, (not shown).
