Abstract
665.194. Buffer-couplings for vehicles. NATIONAL COAL BOARD. Feb. 24, 1949 [March 1, 1948], No. 6478/48. Class 103(v) A coupling link 18 and a spring 24 are mounted in unattached relationship on a buffer element 10 which also carries a coupling horn 14, said coupling link having at its pivoted end a pair of adjacent faces 20, 21 substantially at right angles and forming separate bearing faces for the spring, through the medium of which the link 18 is held in either the coupled or uncoupled position. The coupling link is pivoted on a pin 17, Fig. 2, between lugs 16 of a base 10, Fig. 4, which terminates in an impact surface 12 and a drawbar 13. The spring 24 forces a plunger 23 against the faces 20. 21 and imparts a snap action to the link 18. In use one link operatively engages the horn recess 27 whilst the other merely engages the recess 26 idly but ready to assume the tractive force if the operative link breaks. The bore of the eye 19 in the link is sufficiently large to allow limited horizontal movement of the link for negotiating corners. In a modification. Figs. 5-7 (not shown), the horizontal hinge pin is mounted in a member which is rotatably mounted on a vertical pin carried by a locomotive buffer, thus allowing greater movement on corners. The snap action of the link is provided by a flat plate spring.
