Abstract

654,414. Buflfer couplings for vehicles. ALLEN & SONS (TIPTON). Ltd., W. G., and TOLHURST, W. T. Feb. 17, 1948, Nos. 4549/48 and 3226/49. [Class 103(v)] A buffer coupling for adjoining mine cars comprises a socketed buffer, a loop like coupling link supported normally in a horizontal plane in and guided by the socket and connected pivotally at one of its ends to said buffer by a couplig pin, and balanced springs operating in tension between the buffer and link normally to centralize the link relative to the buffer and to project its other end and to permit of said link receding resiliently into the socket in the event of its projected end fouling any part of a mating buffer of an adjoining mine car. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 1, a link 5 projects from a socketed buffer head 1 under the action of springs 15 on the ends 14, Fig. 4, of a link carrier 13. A captive drop pin 9 depends through a hole 10 in the buffer and through the link 5 which is thereby retained. The projecting end 18 of the link 5 engages a mating buffer 2 and may be secured therein by a drop pin 21 slidable in a guide 19. A crank 27 connected by a rod 28 to the pin 21 is operable from the side 23, Fig. 11, of the car body by displacing the rod 24 axially against springs 11 and rotating the handle 26. A lug 29 is held, by the springs 11, behind an abutment 30 to retain the pin 21 in its inoperative position. In a further embodiment, Fig. 6, the couplings 1 and 2 are similar each comprising a link 5 and a drop pin 21 for coaction with the complementary elements of the adjoining car. The links 5, Fig. 8, project under the action of springs 15 on the link carrier 12. By the use of similar couplings all turnings of cars for coupling is obviated.
