Abstract

617,544. Couplings for vehicles. WATSON, J. Oct. 5, 1946, Nos. 29758/46 and 25167/47. [Class 103 (v)] [Also in Group XV] A coupling for railway rolling stock comprises two hooks 1, 2 on a shank 4 pivoted at 7 to swing in a horizontal plane, the hook 1 being adapted to engage the customary hook coupling of an adjacent vehicle and the other hook 2 being adapted to engage a corresponding hook on a complementary coupling. The hook 2 comprises two vertically spaced hooks and is connected to the shank 4 by means of a cranked portion 3 and is provided with a backwardly sloping part 5 and a buffer part 6. An uncoupling tongue 8 engages a projection between the rails to uncouple two trucks fitted with similar type couplings and the spring 9 returns the coupling to its central position. A hand lever may also be provided for uncoupling and the projection between the rails may be movable. The shank 4 may also be pivoted to a yielding attachment in the vehicle.
