653,944. Automatic couplings for rail vehicles. DOLLERY & PALMER (PNEUMATIC TOOLS), Ltd. Nov. 4, 1948, No. 28712. Convention date, Nov. 4, 1947. [Class 103(v)] An automatic coupling for vehicles comprising coupling members, in the form of a stirrup carrying a hook. which can be rotated by means of pedals and which are returned by springs either towards the front into a horizontal ready-for-coupling position or towards the rear into a horizontal inoperative position, is characterized by a connecting rod maintaining each coupling member in the ready-for-coupling position; a spring acting inside the connecting rod enabling each coupling member to be turned to the inoperative position. A coupling hook 2, Fig. 1, is mounted on a stirrup 3, Fig. 2, the arms 5 of which are pivoted to a tram 1. Two crank arms 6 integral with arms 5 are pivoted to one end of a connecting rod 15 the other end of which has a pin-and-slot connection 16 with the tram 1. The connecting rod 15 comprises a member 7<SP>1</SP> screwed into a tube 9, surrounding a spring 8, and a member 7 screwed into a sleeve 10 formed with a slot 12 which engages a pin 11 carried by the tube 9. The tension on the spring 8 is just sufficient to balance the weight of the coupling member. By pressing pedals 4, formed on the stirrup 3, the coupling members may be disengaged or rotated beyond the dead centre position to the inoperative position illustrated in Fig. 10 (not shown).
