Abstract
645,650. Railway vehicle couplings. ENGLISH STEEL CORPORATION, Ltd., and WHITEHOUSE, D. G. Oct. 8, 1948, No. 26317. [Class 103(v)] In an automatic coupling of the type including a pair of spaced shank arms which can be positioned one on each side of a railway vehicle drawbar hook and pivoted thereto by a tail pin, the inner faces of the shank arms and the side faces of the drawbar hook have lugs which prevent the coupler being engaged with the hook in the operative position and which, when the coupler is swung to the operative position after engagement, coact to resist relative longitudinal movement, thereby relieving the tail pin of draught and buffing forces. Fig. 5 shows the shank arms 8 of an automatic coupling 7 engaged with a draw bar hook 1 in the inoperative position. Semi-annular channels 6 are formed on the hook 1, between abutments 4 and 5, and corresponding lugs 9 on the inner faces of the shank arms 8. When the coupler 7 is swung about the tail pin 10 to the operative position shown in Fig. 6, where it is retained by a pin 14 resting in the hook 1, the lugs 9 enter the channels 6 and ride therein until the portions 9b contact the portions 5b of lugs 5.
