Abstract
987,804. Railway vehicle rigid jawed coupler. NATIONAL CASTINGS CO. Feb. 21, 1963 [March 19, 1962], No. 7074/63. Heading B7T. A rigid jawed coupler, Fig. 1, comprises an aligning wing 8 to the rear of the buffing jaw 4, a horn 10 beneath the head adapted to engage the wing of a mating coupler, and a lug 12 which on mis-alignment of similar heads being coupled is swung with the head to engage the wing 8 of the other coupler and prevent the occurrence of jack-knifing, the lug 12 guiding the couplers during the final stages of coupling, and engaging in a pocket 14 when the couplers are mated to interlock them against excessive vertical displacement. In operation, Figs. 8, 9 and 10, the wing 8 and the horn 10 of vertically displaced couplers A<SP>1</SP> and B<SP>1</SP> contact only at y which acts as a pivot point so that there is a tendency of the couplers to jack-knife laterally in the direction of the arrow. However, before the couplers can jack-knife, the lug 12 on A<SP>1</SP> engages the wing 8 on B<SP>1</SP> and prevents the movement so that coupling takes place in the normal manner.
