Abstract
1458716 Rail vehicle couplings MIDLANDROSS CORP 14 June 1974 [6 Aug 1973] 26511/74 Heading B7T A railway car coupler has a tightened contour compared to an A.A.R. standard No. 10A coupler contour, said coupler comprising a coupler head 14 having a standard No. 10A contour and a knuckle 18 pivoted to said head and having a standard No. 10A contour so modified that when the knuckle is locked in its closed position the pulling face 42 of its nose portion 28 is located approximately <SP>5</SP>/ 64 inch closer to the buffing face 22 of said head as measured along the longitudinal centre line X-X of the coupler, the knuckle contour being further modified compared to a standard No. 10A contour so that its heel 32 and adjacent front face 30 are relieved and contoured along a smooth convex curve 50 formed by several radii, the modified contour of the knuckle providing a contour free slack of approximately <SP>5</SP>/ 8 inch, measured in the longitudinal direction, between two coupled couplers having knuckles of said modified contour, while affording substantially the same amount of horizontal angling between the said coupled couplers as is present between two coupled couplers of standard No. 10A contour. The required vertical angling of couplers of the invention may be achieved by bevelling the top and bottom of the pulling faces 42 and front faces 30 of the knuckles, as illustrated in Fig. 6 (not shown). To facilitate uncoupling operations, the knuckle tail 38 may be relieved to provide a curved inner face portion 36 joining with a straight portion 56.
