664,983. Making rock drills &c. BERRY, B. E. Nov. 1, 1950 [Aug. 24, 1949], No. 22061/49. Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv). [Also in Group XXIII] Brazing; joints.-In a rock drill or the like in which the cutting edge 2a of the bit 3, integral with or separable from the drill stem, is formed by a hard metal insert 2 secured within a slot 4 in the bit, at least the two longitudinal side walls 2c of the insert are first faced with a firmly adherent lamina 5 of a metal or alloy of relatively high melting point, the assembly placed in the slot, and then secured in position by a bonding medium of relatively low-melting point, e.g. tinman's solder or a non-metallic adhesive. The laminµ may also cover the end walls 2b and/or the bottom 2d of the insert, they may be made of perforated or imperforate metal or gauze, and they may be brazed or welded to the insert, preferably in a hydrogen atmosphere. Alternatively, they may be provided by dipping in, or by spraying or electrodeposition of, molten metal.
