Abstract
668,810. Rock drills. HARD METALS, Ltd. Sept. 27, 1950 [Sept. 27, 1949], No. 23711/50. Class 124. [Also in Group XXII] In a rock drill in which the cutting edge 2a of a bit 3, integral with or separable from the drill stem, is formed by a hard metal insert 2 secured within a slot 4 in the bit by brazing with the aid of metal shims 5, a shim is first secured to each side of the insert, the assembly placed in the slot, and then secured in position by brazing or welding at a temperature insufficient significantly to affect the connection between the insert and the shims. The latter may be made of perforated or imperforate metal or gauze, their outer ends may be bent outwardly as at 5a, or they may be in the form of a box 5, 6 open at the top and bottom. The shims may be secured to the insert in a neutral or reducing atmosphere by brazing or condensation of metal vapour, or by bowing-in slightly two opposite walls of the box to frictionally engage the insert. A single brazing operation may be used to secure together the insert, box and tool. Specification 664,983 is referred to.
