Abstract

668,991. Drilling-bits. BOART PRODUCTS (SOUTH AFRICA), Ltd. May 3, 1950 [Nov. 8, 1949], No. 10951/50. Class 83 (iii). A rotary drill-bit comprises a metal body having two wings 5 separated by a slot, a single insert 7 of hard material secured to the wings and accommodated partly within the slot, the insert presenting obliquely inclined cutting- faces 11 and diametrally-opposed lateral reaming edges 2, a stem 16 for attachment to a drillrod line, and a coolant passage 17 in the stem connected with two passages 18 opening into recesses formed between the wings and the faces of the insert. The insert is of tungsten carbide and is brazed to the body. It may be formed in two parts which may be mounted with a space 15, Fig. 2, between them. When two inserts are used, they may have recesses 19, Fig. 6, or projections 21, Fig. 8, to assist in securing them to the body. The inserts may be cast or sintered.
