Abstract
636,426. Percussive drills. MALHERBE, J. A. S. Nov. 5, 1947, No. 29561. Convention date, Dec. 27, 1946. [Class 124] True cylindrical recesses are formed in the face of a drill bit and cylindrical flat-based slugs of hard material are inserted therein, the flat bases of the slugs bottoming on the bases of the recesses and the tops of the slugs projecting from the recesses and shaped to form cutting edges. As shown, three slugs 1 may be fitted into recesses 4 drilled along a diameter of the bit, the two outer slugs being larger than the inner and all three held in position by brazing metal. The bottom peripheral edges of slugs and recesses may be radiused. The slugs may all be of equal size and a space left between two to allow a clearing hole to open at the end of the bit, Fig. III (not shown). In a further modification, Fig. V (not shown), the outer slugs may be fitted at an angle to the axis of the bit to protect the sides of the bit against excessive wear. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 includes also a slug of ovoid form applied to the modification of Fig. III (not shown). This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
