Abstract
737,471. Percussive drills. SANDVIKENS JERNVERKS AKTIEBOLAG. Sept. 26, 1952 [Sept. 28, 1951], No. 24198/52. Class 124. A percussive drill bit has two or more cutting inserts spaced apart from the axis of rotation of the bit to form a counterpeg during drilling and a further cutting insert at the axis having at least one cutting edge lying wholly or in part in a plane at right angles to the axis and situated rearwardly of the cutting edges of the other inserts by an amount which is at least 10 per cent of the effective diameter of the bit. As shown, a drill bit may have two parallel cutting edges 6, 7 and a third cutting edge 10 which is situated rearwardly of the edges 6, 7 and operates on the counterpeg formed by these edges. The edge 10 may be at any desired angle with respect to the edges 6, 7, or the insert may have a flat top with two edges forming the boundaries of the top, Fig. 1 (not shown). When the bottoms of the inserts lie in the same plane the height of the central insert should be not more than 75 per cent of that of the other inserts. A number of equally-spaced radial inserts may be used with a central insert of conical shape. The bits may be arranged for the supply of clearing liquid.
