[Also in Group XXIII] A drill bit comprises a head having one or more inserts arranged in grooves, the grooves having two converging sides and a base inclined longitudinally from its larger leading end to its smaller trailing end, the sides and the base converging in a direction that in operation the inserts, which have shapes mating with the grooves, are wedged in the grooves. As shown, a bit has a head 1 having a plurality of grooves carrying inserts 3, 10, 12, 13 and is rotatable in the direction of the arrow, Fig. 2. The sides of the grooves are wider at the leading end than at the trailing end and the base is inclined in the same direction so that, as the drill rotates, the inserts, which are shaped to mate with the grooves, are firmly wedged in the grooves. The inserts may be initially fixed in the grooves by soldering or brazing.
