Abstract
868,175. Drills. MINE SAFETY APPLIANCES CO. July 2, 1959 [March 19, 1959], No. 22738/59. Class 83 (3). A rotatable rock-drill comprises a tubular spindle 3 having a drill-bit 4 at one end, and means connected to the other end for removing the dust produced during drilling. The polygonal end 3a of the spindle 3 is engageable with a chuck 6, the chuck being surrounded by a casing 9 sealed at 10 and carrying a member 12 which is connected to a means for creating a suction for removing the dust. The chuck is rotated by a motor connected to a square plug 28. The drill-bit 4, Fig. 4, has a polygonal end 15 which is inserted in a corresponding bore in the end of the spindle 3, and dowelled thereto at 18, and the face and side cutting-edges 21, 22 on the bit are located across a diagonal of the end 15. The dust produced during drilling is drawn through slots 26 in the spindle through the bore into slots 8, and out through member 12, each slot having an area at least as great as the cross-sectional area of the bore of the spindle.
