Abstract

A substantially horizontal borehole is drilled through soil or rock by a rotary and percussive drill, the borings being directed into the drill string 11 supporting the bit 1, 2 to be transported by the axial vibratory movement of the string to discharge from the string through outlets 23. The bit has an annular projection 9 which serves to compact the walls of the borehole. Flushing fluid is supplied by a pipe 17. In modifications the pile 17 is dispensed with, and the bit is replaced by a core bit. The bit or string may be stepped to permit a casing to enter the hole with the drill.
