Abstract

[Class 83 (iii)] In a bit of the projecting wing type for a rotary rock drill the orbits of movement of the cutting tips do not coincide but form concentric circles about the bit and drill bar and the cutting tip of one wing projects in advance of the others. The production of a core in the centre of the bit is thus avoided and a pilot hole for the outer tip is formed by the inner tip. The shank of the bit may be inserted directly in the boring bar or in the socket of a larger bit to act as a guide or centering cutter. The bit may be formed with two or more wings 3, 4 faced with tungsten carbide, the wing 3 being closer to the centre of rotation than the wing 4 and the inner edge 3b coinciding with the centre of rotation of the shank 2 and the drill as a whole. The path of the outer edge of the wing 3, Fig. 3, overlaps that of the inner edge of the outer wing 4 and the tip of the wing 3 projects in advance of the tip of the wing 4 so that the inner tip forms a pilot hole for the outer one.
