Abstract

500,147. Drills. CROFTON & CO. (ENGINEERS). Ltd., C., and CROFTON, H. B. March 18, 1938, No. 8436. [Class 83 (iii)] A rotary drill bit for forming shot-holes in coal, rock, &c. having two blades 12, separated by a central U-shaped gap 14 has the leading faces 16 of the blades raked forwardly at tin angle of 5‹ or more, preferably 15‹, whereby the transverse' distance between the edges of the gap increases from the tip to the bottom of the gap, these edges being skewed to one another. The tungsten carbide tips 18 brazed or welded to the blades are formed thinner than usual and the points 20 of the cutting edges may be concentric or eccentric. The bit may fit within a second cutter 22, Fig. 4, for enlarging the hole, this cutter also having blades 28 raked forwardly as shown in Fig. 2 at an angle of 22‹. The base of the bit fits a recess 26 in the cutter and its shank 10, passes through a hole 24.
