585,709. Boring earth. HURDITCH, J., and HOWARD & CO., Ltd., J. Aug. 8, 1944, No. 15086. [Class 85] [Also in Groups XXII and XXIII] In a boring tool for earth or rock, the head 12 is of dome shape and carries one or more spiral flukes each having a cutting edge along the whole of their length or, spaced cutters 15 ; both may have tungsten carbide tips and they progressively decrease in depth from the rear to the nose. The cutting tips overlap laterally and in the case of separate cutters these also overlap to leave no path untraced in boring. Spaced cutters may have the inter-spaces armoured with tungsten carbide. For drilling rock a pilot cutter may be affixed to the head. The boring shaft may be divided into lengths each containing a spiral extractor thereon and adapted to be jointed together by keying, screwing, bolts or sockets, &c. The shaft may be tubular to allow coolant or compressed air to reach cutting surfaces and assist boring and removal of spoil. Diamonds or diamond dust may be incorporated in the cutting-edges.
