660,440. Drills and cutters. HOOLE, C. B. Aug. 3, 1950 [July 23, 1949; Sept. 12, 1949], Nos. 19421/49 and 23471/49. Class 83 (iii). [Also in Group XXIII] In a rotary drill or like tool tipped with one or more inserts of carbide or like hard material, one or more faces of each insert is formed with serrations emerging at a cutting edge of the insert and extending generally in a lengthwise direction away from that edge. Fig. 1 shows an insert 7 with serrations 9 lying in the line of feed, whilst Fig. 5 shows an insert 19 with serrations 20, 23 lying at angles to that line. The serrations may be parallel to each other, diverge or converge as they approach the cutting edge, or cross each other to produce pyramidal or like protrusions, or the inserts may constitute side-by-side elements 58, each with a serration, as shown in Fig. 12. The serrations of one insert may be staggered with respect to those of another, and they may be of the same or different pitch. Fig. 13 shows a double reamer bit with two sets of inserts 61, 62 sloping upwards and downwards towards the centre, respectively, and with axial holes 67. . . 70 and spaces 71 for the removal of material. The Specification also describes and illustrates various profiles for the serrations, together with their application to chisels, wall-drills, and M-, W- and Z-shaped inserts.
