Abstract

664,652. Container closures. METAL BOX CO., Ltd., and JACKSON, J. M. July 19, 1950. [July 19, 1949; Oct. 24, 1949] Nos. 10034/49 and 27297/49. Class 125(iii). A side seal closure for containers comprises a crown 12 and flange 13 adhering to which is a plastic gasket 15 which tapers from the flange. The gasket of Fig. 1 is of pear-drop cross-section and is formed by placing the closure opening upwards, squirting plastic around the flange, inverting the closure and, under heat, allowing the plastic to flow under gravity to the pear-drop form. The gasket of Fig. 4 is formed by squirting the plastic around the flange as before but the plastic is allowed to set in that position so that its surface tension produces a gasket of subtantially semicircular cross-section. This closure has an out-turned edge 17 and is applied to a container having a step 20 with which the gasket coacts to form a combined top and side seal. The flange or the crown and flange may be lacquered before the application of the plastic to improve the adherence of the gasket. The closure may comprise a pulpboard top disc and an L-shaped ring flange instead of the integral closure shown.
