Abstract

523,202. Closures for containers. CHIVERS & SONS, Ltd., and FISON, F. J. Dec. 28, 1938, No. 37641. [Class 125 (iii)] In a closure for a container, different portions of. coacting surfaces between the container and the cover provide seals against internal pressure or vacuum. The metal container A, Fig. 1, receives a lid or cover B with a depending flange B<SP>1</SP>; the middle part of the cover-is preferably dished so that an inverted channel is formed between the inner wall of the lid and the flange. The upper edge of the container is rolled or beaded, and an annular projection A<SP>2</SP> of obtuse V-shaped section is also formed by a wheeling process. After a suitable rubber or composition ring C has been placed in position on the container, or in the-flange B<SP>1</SP> of the lid, this last is put on the container and is formed by a wheeling operation to provide a complementary shape to the container projection A<SP>2</SP>. Seals PS, capable of resisting pressure within the container, are formed by the surfaces sloping inwards below the projection A<SP>2</SP> and also between the rolled edge A' and the flange B', while a seal VS which is effective when a vacuum exists in the container is formed by the parts above the'projection A<SP>2</SP>. A tab C' may be attached to the rubber sealing ring C so that this ring may be pulled away to break the seal and permit the cover to be lifted. More than one projection A<SP>2</SP> may be formed upon the container, and in a modification 'the projection may be inwards instead of outwards. The cover may fit with its sealing ring C inside the container, or, as shown in Fig. 12, the flange B' of the cover may have a circular cross section and fit over the beaded edge A' of the container with a sealing ring C between, thereby forming pressure seals PS and a vacuum seal VS. In a modification the coacting surfaces are screw threads so that the cover forms a screw top. In further modifications the lid is not secured to the container wall, but as shown in Fig. 17 to a flange D' formed on a ring D secured to the top of the container wall. A recess may be formed in the cover or the ring to receive the tab C'.
