Capsules and like closures; capsules, making.- A closure for tumblers and other containers comprises a cap having a central body portion 2 and a depending peripheral flange 3, a readily disruptible continuous ring provided with a skirt 5 which neatly encircles the flange 3 and extends below it, and a gasket 7 disposed in a groove 6 in the skirt 5 and overlying the flange 3, the gasket extending below the flange and having a portion of its inner periphery exposed. When applied to the container, the closure takes the form shown in Fig. 4, the skirt 5 pressing the gasket against the flange 3, which closely conforms to the wall of the container, and the outer wall of the container below the flange. The inwardly extending portion, by which the ring engages the body portion 2 of the cap, is provided with a tearing tab 11. If the container wall is provided with a shoulder, the flange 3 terminates above the shoulder and the skirt 5 is turned in beneath it. To assemble the closure, the cap is placed on a spring-pressed plunger member 14, Fig. 10, the gasket 7 is placed around it, and the ring, with its groove only partially formed, is disposed on the gasket. A chuck member 12, in which the plunger 14 slides, is raised against an upper member 16 whereupon the lower edge of the, skirt 5 is turned inwards to complete the formation of the gasket-retaining groove.
