CONTAINER Filed Marsh 19, 1942 I Patented June 15, 1943 CONTAINER Harry- Sebell, Marblehead, Mass., assignor of onehalt. to Arthur H. Parker, Lexington, Mass.
Application Marcli19, 1942, Serial No. 435,321
3 Claims.
This invention relates to containers and especially to containers in which the body portion is formed of glass; plastics, fiber, or other nonmetallic material, and the cover or closure member is formed of sheet metal.
An object of the invention is to provide a novel construction for locking the cover to the container body when the container is first filled and sealed and which also provides means by which the cover is hinged to the body when the container is opened.
In order to give an understanding of the invention, I have illustrated in the drawing a selected embodiment thereof, which will now be described, after which the novel features will be pointed out in the claims.
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary sectional view through a sealed container embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the cover or closure member.
Fig: 3 is a view of the sheet metal piece from "which the retaining band is formed.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the retaining band with a portion broken out.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary sectional view showing the tear strip removed and the closure swung into an open position.
In Fig. 1, the container body is indicated at I, and as stated above, it may be'made of glass, plastics, fiber, or any other suitable material.
At the top edge portion of the body the wall is thickened, as shown at 2, and is formed with an exterior rib 3 which provides on its upper side an upwardly facing shoulder 4 situated somewhat below the top edge 5 of the container wall,
and on its lower edge a downwardly facing shoulder 6.
The cover or closure member is indicated at l, and it is provided with a peripheral skirt portion 8 which encircles the container body above the shoulder i.
The closur member I is also provided with a hinge-forming tab 9 which is preferably integral therewith and which provides a hinge for the closure member after the container has been opened, as will be presently described.
When the closure is applied to the container body, the tab 9 is bent downwardly so as to overlie the outer face of the rib 3, and preferably said tab will be made long enough so that the end thereof can be bent around the shoulder 6, as shown in Figs. 1 and 5. The skirt portion the closure member to the other side edge of said tab. The bottom edge of the skirt 8 is shown as being bent to form an outwardly directed bead l0, and the skirt may have such a vertical dimension that it will rest on the upwardly facing shoulder l.
The central portion of the closure member is shown as depressed slightly, thereby forming with the skirt 8 a channel II to receive a suitable packing or sealing compound l2. When the cover is applied to the container body, the upper edge 5 thereof enters this channel ll slightly, and the sealing compound B! provides a tight seal.
The cover or closure member I is retained its closed position on the container by means of a retaining band Hi. This retaining band is made from a blank it of sheet metal which is bent into circular form and the ends l5 and iii of which are welded or united together in some suitable way. The upper edge of this retaining band is folded over to form an inwardly directed bead l1, and the band has such a diameter that it snugly fits the exterior of the rib 3.
In sealing the container, the-closure member l is placed in position with its skirt 8 encircling the upper edge of the container body, and then the retaining band it is placed in postiion encircling the rib 3 and with its bead ll engaging the bead to at the lower edge of the skirt 8. When the parts are thus assembled,.pressure is applied to the bead ii of the retaining band to force'it tightly into engagement with the bead lb of the closure, and then the lower edge E8 of I the retaining band is bent inwardly underneath the shoulder 6, as shown in Fig. 1, thereby locking the retaining band in place.
This retaining band is provided with a tear strip which can be torn out when the container is to be opened. Such tear strip may be provided for by making the blank It with two score lines I9 and 20 which form between them the tear-out strip 2|. The blank I4 is preferably made at one end with a tab 22 which is in line with the tear-out strip 2| and forms an extension plement to the free end of the tab 22 and then 8 of the closure 1 extends entirely thereabout extear the tear strip 2| from the retaining band. By so doing, the retaining band is divided into a lower portion 23, which is retained on' the rib 3, and an upper portion 24 having the bead H, which is retained on the closure member.
The application of the retaining band I3 to the container body serves to clamp the hinge-forming tab firmly between said band and the exterior face of the rib 3. After-the tear strip 2|, has been removed from the retaining band, then the cover or closure 7 can be lifted from the top. of the container body by inserting a suitable implement between the bead l and the shoulder 4. Since the hinge-forming tab 9 remains clamped to the rib 3 by the lower portion 23 of the retaining band, said tab will provide a hinge about which the closur member I may be swung, as shown in Fig. 5, when the container is to be opened. This tab also constitutes a permanent connection between the closure and the container body and thus forms a hinge about which the cover can be swung as the container is repeatedly opened and closed.
I claim:
l. A container comprising a container body having an exterior circumferentialrib adjacent its top, a closure member provided with a peripheral skirt which fits the outer wall of the body above the rib and which terminates at its lower edge in an outwardly directed bead, said closure member having integral therewith a hinge-forming tab which extends downwardly past the rib, and a retaining band-encircling and tightly fit-' ting said rib and clamping said tab thereto, the upper edge of the band being formed with an inwardly directed bead which overlies the bead of said skirt and the lower edge of said band together with the lower vend of the underlying hinge-forming tab being bent inwardly underneath the rib, said band being provided between its top and bottom edges with a tear strip portion which can be torn out when the container is to be opened. the hinge-forming tab which remains clamped to the rib after the tear-out strip has been removed constituting a hinge for the closure member.
2. A container comprising a container body having a circumferential downwardly facing shoulder adjacent its top edge, a closure member provided with a peripheral skirt which encircles and fits the outer face of the body above the lower vend of the tab being bent inwardly underneath said shoulder, said band being provided between its top and bottom edges with a tearstrip portion which can be torn out when the container is to be opened, the hinge-forming tab which remains clamped to the container body after the tear-out strip has been removed constituting a hinge for the closure member.
3. A container comprising a container body having a circumferential downwardly facing shoulder adjacent its top edge, a closure member provided with a peripheral skirt which encircles and fits the outer face of the body above said shoulderand which terminates at its lower edge in an outwardly directed'bead, said closure member having integral therewith a downwardly directed hinge-forming tab which engages the ex,- terior of the container body above said shoulder, and a retaining band'encircling and tightly fitting the wall of the body above said shoulder and clamping the tab to said wall, the upper edge of said band being formed with an inwardly directed bead which overlies and engages the bead of said skirt and the lower edge of said band being bent inwardly underneath said shoulder, said band being provided in its intermediate portion with an annular tear strip which can be torn out when the container is 'to be opened, the part of the band below the tear strip remaining clamped to the container, said tab extending below the tear strip whereby after the tear strip has been removed the lower end of the tab remains clamped to the container by the lower portion of the band and said tab then constitutes a hinge for the closure member.
