Abstract

336,142. Armstrong, J. J. V., (Phoenix- Hermetic Co.). Nov. 23, 1929. Capsules and like closures; sealing devices for stoppers and other closures; vacuum closures.- In metal closures for jars having an outer smooth substantially vertical walls, in which a divided holding band is employed, the ends of which may be held together by tongue and slot connection, as shown, the band 5 is formed between its upper and lower edges with one or more indented ribs 17 which, on tightening the band, grip the wall of the jar to hold the cover 2 in position, and while applying the closure hold the band and cover together as a unit. The holding tongue 13 may be reinforced by a central rib 13<a>, and the opening tongue 10 may be reinforced about its edge by a rib 11. The band is stated to be useful for holding the cover in position during sterilization, air pressure forming the subsequent sealing force. A sealing gasket 4 is preferably incorporated in the cover portion 3.
