Abstract

664,556. Signs. BROOKS, A. C., and RYNFORD INDUSTRIES, Ltd. April 26, 1950 [April 26, 1949], No. 11119/49. Class 3(ii). An illuminated sign comprises an elongated metallic casing 11 containing an electrical source of illumination 20 and having a slot along one side and out-turned flanges 14, 15, on the casing projecting parallel to one another along each side of the slot, means extending across the slot from flange to flange for securing projecting transparent plastic sheet material 16, 17 which is gripped along one edge between the flanges and carries a design formed by a series of separate depressions 21 the free edges of the sheet being unframed so as to distribute light to surrounding objects. The depressions 21 which are on the rear of the front sheet are conical or curved in section and each is surrounded by a counter-bored depression 22 on the front face of the rear sheet which is coloured with paint to give a contrasting margin around the indentation 21. The bottom of each counter-bored depression 22 may be covered by a metallic reflector -instead of being painted. In a modification three sheets may be used to produce a double-sided sign, the centre sheet being opaque and having the counterbored depressions on each side and the outside sheets being transparent and having the depressions 21 on their rear surfaces. In a further modification a single transparent sheet may be used having depressions only or depressions surrounded by a counter-bored depression on the same side of the sheet, the margins of the recess being coloured. The edges of the sheets adjacent the lamps may be coloured or rotatable colour screens may be provided in the casing.
