Abstract
704,664. Changing signs. GEE, S. G. March 9, 1951 [Dec. 9, 1949], No. 31713/49. Class 3(1) An illuminated sign comprises an endless blind 7 which is formed of transparent or translucent material having a pattern thereon and which is arranged between a light source 11 and a screen carrying advertising matter, the blind being driven by an electric motor so that the light from the source passes through two oppositely moving parts of the blind before reaching the advertising matter, a sheet 6 of transparent material having an uneven surface being disposed between the light source and the screen carrying the advertising matter, whereby light containing moving characteristics imparted to it by its passage through the blind is diffused by the sheet 6 before illuminating the advertising matter. A casing 3 having a viewing aperture 21 contains the blind which is mounted on rollers 9, 10 and is continuously moved by the electric motor (not shown). The web is painted or printed with a pattern which leaves transparent or translucent spaces through which light from the lamps 11 can pass. The pattern may be in a plurality of colours. In front of screen 6 and adjacent the viewing aperture is the screen carrying the advertising matter; this is either a sheet of glass bearing transparent advertising symbols on an opaque background or as shown part of an endless web 19 bearing advertising symbols 18. The web is mounted on rollers 20 and is moved by the motor which drives the web 7.
