Abstract

674,238. Signs. PRIESTLEY STUDIOS, Ltd. May 1, 1950 [May 10, 1949] No. 12397/49. Classes 3(i) and 3(ii) An edge illuminated sign compises a plurality of sheets 24-26 of transparent acrylic resin each being a design or portion of a design drawn or otherwise produced on the surface of the sheets remote from the viewer, the sheets being placed together or arranged in space relation one behind the other so that each design or portion of the design can be seen when the design is viewed from the front. In the construction shown each of the sheets 24- 26 has both of its ends bent to enter slots in an opaque casing 13 so that each sheet is edge-illuminated from both ends by a lamp 16. A rotatable cylindrical colour screen 27 is arranged over the lamp with its axis parallel to the ends of the sheets and has vanes 21 at the top so that it is moved by hot air rising from the lamp. 'The colours are arranged in helical bands on the screen. Each sheet 24-26 has part of a design 13-15 painted on its rear surface. In a modification one end only of each sheet is illuminated and the sheets are arranged at right angles to the axis of rotation of the colour screen, the ends of the sheets being curved to follow the contour of the colour screen. The colours are applied in bands aound the cylindrical screen, the bands being divided into differently coloured segments. The sheets may be straight or the shape of a figure 7 in section and may be spaced from each other or touching. The edges of the sheets, which protrude into the casing are polished and may be coloured if desired. The colour may vary along tht length of the edge. A detachable sheet may be provided so that advertising legends may be easily changed.
