I claim as my invention:
1. An illuminated sign comprising a plate. of light pervious material having a smooth surface, means arranged to transmit light through. .an,
edge of said plate and a readily applied and'.r-'
faces of said glass plate in passing substantially edgewise through the plate and a readily applied and removable inscription of translucent material upon the smooth surface of said plate adapted to be rendered luminous by dispersion of light received from said glass plate.
4. In an illuminated sign, a smooth surfaced glass plate, an opaque backing on one of the smooth surfaces of said plate, means arranged to transmit light into said plate angularly with respect to the smooth surfaces thereof, whereby the light is reflected back and forth between the smooth surfaces of said glass plate in passing substantially edgewise through the plate and a readily applied and removable inscription on the smooth front surface of the plate adapted to be rendered luminous by dispersion of light received from said glass plate.
5. An illuminated sign comprising a glass plate having smooth surfaces, an opaque backing for said plate, luminescent tubing arranged to transmit light through the edges of said glass plate and a readily applied and removable inscription of translucent material on the smooth front surface of said plate.
6. An illuminated sign comprising a plate of light pervious material having smooth inner and outer surfaces, means for transmitting light substantially edgewise through said plate, an opaque non-reflecting backing for said plate and a readily applied and removable inscription of translucent material on one of the smooth surfaces of said plate and having a contrasting color with respect to said backing.
7. An illuminated sign comprising a plate of light pervious material having smooth inner and outer surfaces, an opaque non-reflecting backing for said plate, means for transmitting light substantially through the entire peripheral edge of said plate and a readily applied and removable inscription of translucent material on the smooth outer surface of said plate having a contrasting color with respect to said backing whereby light transmitted edgewise through said plate is dispersed to produce luminescence of said inscription.
8. An illuminated sign comprising a pair of plates of light pervious material arranged side by side, said plates having continuously smooth inner and outer surfaces, an opaque non-reflecting backing between said plates, a luminescent tube extending substantially entirely around the peripheral edges of said plates and a readily applied and removable inscription of translucent material on the smooth outer surfaces of said plates having a contrasting color with respect to said backing and adapted to be rendered luminous through the effect of the edgewise illumination.
9. The method of producing and displaying an illuminated advertisement which consists in transmitting light edgewise through a smooth surfaced light pervious plate and removably applying to a smooth surface of the plate a substance in the form of characters capable of becoming luminescent from the elfect of light obtained from the interior of the plate.
