Figure 4 illustrates in detail the manner in which the coatings are applied to the glass pane 20 and the backing paper 22. The section is taken through the letter S and the outlines formed by coatings for this letter are indicated at 32 on the glass pane 20. The coatings on the backing paper 22 are shown at 33. These coatings form the body portions of the letters. It would be noted that the coating 33 is alined with the outlines 32 formed on the glass pane 20. The coating 33 is' preferably of a different color than the outline 32.
The glass pane 21 is'provided so that one may write with crayon or paints upon the exposed surface thereof. Then when the lamp'25 projects light down through the glass pane 21, the light -will be projected through the paint or crayon which will be illuminated and will stand out in bold relief against the glass pane 21.
The sign associated with the glass pane 20 is preferably of a permanent character, while the sign associated with the glass pane 21 may be altered at will.
The sign shown in the drawing is preferably adapted to be suspended in a show window or the like. For this purpose, the housing l0 is provided with hooks 35, to which cords may be attached. l,
The backing member 22 has additional lettering 44 which is visible through the glass 20 and does not utilize any of the light projected into this glass.
It will be readily understood, that signs embodying the invention may be constructed with a considerable amount of lettering thereon or with relatively large intricate designs. Relatively small areas ofthe letters or of the designs are formed by painting or writing directly upon the glass panel and therefore a relatively small amount of light is-dissipated through the coatings formed by painting or writing on the glass panel. The body portions of the designs or letters are formed by coloring the backing member in any manner desired. Thus, in other embodiments of the invention, outlines of a design or outlines of letters are painted or written, in the manner described, upon the glass panes and the backing members are colored with various colors which do not include necessarily dark colors. Some of the colored portions co-operate with the outlines on the glass pane to complete the designs or letter-"s and to make them stand out against the glass panes even illuminated. Of course, when the panes are illuminated in the manner described above, the outlines of the letters or designs project a relatively intense light and the body portions of the designs are formed by the colored portions which have been placed upon the backing members.
The term design is employed generally in the appended claims to include ornamental designs, lettering, etc., an ornamental design is shown at 40 in the dra It consists of outlines 41 on the pane 20 and body portions 42 on the backing member 22.
While I have shown and described certain embodiments of my invention, it is tobe understood that it is capable of many modifications. Changes, therefore, in the construction and arrangement may be made without departing from `the spirit and scope of the invention as disclosed in the appended claims, in which it is my intention to claim all novelty inherent in my invention as broadly as possible, in view of the prior art.

What I claim as new,'and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: A
1. A device of the kind described comprising a plate of light pervious material having portions of a design marked thereon, a dark colored backing member for said plate, light colored coatings on said backing surface completing the design on said plate, and means for projecting light into said plate through an edge thereof. 2. A device of the kind described comprising a plate of light pervious material, coatings on said' plate forming the outlines of data to be displayed, a dark colored backing for said plate, said backing member having light colored portions forming the body portions of said data, andv means for projecting light into said plate through an edge thereof.
3. A device of the kind described comprising a plate of light pervious material, a coating adhering to a surface of said plate, a dark colored backing member for sad plate, a light colored coating on a portion of said backing member, said light colored coating being visible through said plate and said coatings co-operating to form display data, and means for projecting light into said plate through an edge thereof.
4. A device of the kind described comprising a plate of light pervious material, data painted on a surface of said plate, a backing member for said plate, said backing member having a light colored portion co-operating with said data painted on said plate, and means for projecting light into said plate through an edge thereof.
5. A device of the kind described compnising a plate of light pervious material having painted portions, a dark backing member forlsaid plate having light colored portions cci-operating with said painted portions, and means for projecting light into said plate through an edge thereof.
6. A device of the kind described comprising a portions of a design marked thereon; a backing member for said plate 'and spaced therefrom, said backing member having differently colored portions visible through said plate, some of the .last mentioned portions being portions of said design, and means for projecting light into said plate through an edge thereof.
