Abstract

1,044,351. Illuminated signs. PERTINT Ltd. April 4, 1963 [April 10, 1962: Sept. 4, 1962], Nos. 13773/62 and 33859/62. Heading G5C. In an illuminated display sign in which indicia are carried by a sheet or sheets of transparent glass or plastics illuminated from the edge, the sheet or sheets are notched at 32 so as to be located by the glass envelope of one or more filament lamps 22 whose power is insufficient to melt or discolour the sheet(s). In Fig. 3, grooves 32 fit bulbs 22, whose filaments run parallel to the edge of sheet 4. Figs. 4, 5 (not shown), illustrate two sheets (46), (48) bearing indicia on their rear and front faces respectively, and a contrasting backing sheet (50). The sheets (46), (48) are illuminated by separate bulbs (22a), (22b), fitted with masks (Fig. 5a, not shown), so that each illuminates only one sheet. Edges of sheets not adjacent to the lamps may be painted or covered with metal strip or plastic extrusion to reflect light and embellish the sign. A sheet may comprise a heat-resistant section near the lamp bonded edgewise to a less resistant section, the bond being light conducting. A single sheet may comprise several edgewise abutting parts separated by opaque members and illuminated by different lamps. The plastic may be polymethylmethacrylate. Indicia may be printed on the sheets in opaque, transparent or transluscent ink. The lamps may be mains or battery powered. Fig. 5b (not shown), illustrates a circuit by which one sheet in Fig. 5 may be permanently illuminated, the other switched-on and off by a flasher unit. In a sign using several sheets (Fig. 7, not shown), several light sources may operate intermittently and in predetermined sequence to build up a sign progressively. Adjacent sheets may be illuminated in turn by a single lamp, which may be moved from sheet to sheet, or a moving mask and one fixed lamp may be used.
