Dec. 18, 1951, No. 29650/51 Class 3(2) A luminous sign comprising symbols 6 of translucent material and an opaque or translucent plate 1 having light transmitting slots or channels 6 formed therein corresponding in shape to, but of smaller dimensions than the symbols, the latter being secured by adhesive directly to the front surface of the plate so as to cover and overlap the slots or channels formed therein. The plate 1 is supported in the front of a casing having reflecting walls 2 by means of a frame 5 so as to be rear illuminated by a lamp 4. The symbols 6 are cut completely or partially through the plate 1 and each symbol is carried on the front of the plate by a corresponding symbol 7 the limbs of which are wider than the corresponding limbs of the symbol cut in the plate. Any detached parts of the plate 1 are kept in position by the symbols 7. The plate 1 may be arranged for rear illumination by daylight.
