Abstract
663,744. Furnaces. DORR CO. May 24, 1948 [June 25, 1947No. 13958/48. Class 51 (ii), In a furnace for treating finely. divided solid material in which a bed of the material is main. tained in a fluidized state by streams of gas flowing upwardly through apertures in a horizontal partition on which the bed is supported, the apertures are fitted with orificed throttle plates 121 which reduce the diameter of the streams of gas and are stated to prevent turbulence and the clogging of the apertures with solid deposits. The diameter of the orifice 122 is from one-fifth to one half that of the aperture, which is made larger than would be feasible if the throttleplates were not used. The velocity of flow through the aperture upstream of the plate may, accordingly, be reduced to below 30 feet per sec., i.e. below the velocity at which turbulence is likely to occur, the increase in velocity produced by flow through the orifice being sufficient to ensure fluidization of the bed. The furnace described is similar to that described in Specification 658,611 which is referred to.
