Abstract
699,151. Heating granular materials for use as heat transmitting-media. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP DE BATAAFSCHE PETROLEUM MAATSCHAPPIJ. June 13, 1951 [June 15, 1950] No. 14012/51. Class 64 (ii) A fluidizing gas, e.g. hot combustion gases for heating a medium flowing in pipes 9, is dispersed by a bed 6 of a particulate solid surrounding a gas inlet 2, the particle size of the bed material being larger than that of the mass 7 which is to be fluidized and which is supported by the bed. Moreover the mass 7, e.g. of dune sand, when quiescent, rests mainly or wholly on a permeable partition 5 located immediately above and serving to restrain the bed material from displacement relative to the containing vessel during operating. The sand acts.as an intermediary for the transmission of heat from the fluidizing gas to the pipes 9. The particles of the bed 6 in the main have a maximum dimension between 2 and 10 mm. and the partition 5 covering the bed is perforated with 2 mm. openings. These particles, e.g. of gravel or granulated rock, are angular or irregular in shape, are of higher specific gravity than the mass 7 to be fluidized and may be cemented together, by surface fusion, chemical means or a cement, at least in the upper part of the bed 6. The grains of the fluidized mass 7 have an average maximum dimension of 180 microns. A cap 3 deflects the burner combustion gases leaving each inlet 2 and these gases pass out of the cylindrical vessel 1 by an outlet 8.
