Abstract

663,696. Grinding machines. BROWN & SHARPE MFG. CO. Dec. 8, 1949 [Dec. 30, 1948], No. 31513/49. Class 60 A grinding machine, having an internal grinding fixture on a bracket 16 pivotally supported about the spindle of an external grinding wheel 10 for movement between low operative and raised inoperative positions, has supporting means for the bracket 16 comprising a member 34 pivoted at 36 or a support 14 and biassed against a pair of contact surfaces on the bracket 16, and a device 46 connected between the latter and the support 14 to draw the bracket against the pivot 36 and the member 34. The upper edge of the member 34 engages a finished bearing surface on the bracket 16 while the contact surfaces are provided by two adjustable drop screws 39 supported in the abut. ment 40, the bias means for the member 34 being in the form of a spring 38. When the bracket 16 is in its low or operative position it is secured by the device 46, which is in the form of a bolt, and when it is in its raised or inoperative position it is secured by the member 34 engaging a lug 50 on the bracket, the bolt 46 having been withdrawn to an inoperative position where it is held by a spring clip. A bushing 22 surrounding the spindle of the external grinding wheel forms the pivotal mounting for the bracket 16. The spindle 20 of the internal grinding wheel is driven by a belt 26 from an electric motor carried on the support 14. The work is supported between a headstock and a tailstock mounted on a longitudinally movable support and the grinding wheel support is mounted for transverse adjustment. For internal grinding, the work is supported by the headstock alone.
