Abstract

660,831. Vacuum brakes. GRESHAM & CRAVEN, Ltd., and MARSH, G. C. Jan. 9, 1950 [Jan. 10, 1949], No. 663/49. Class 103 (i). [Also in Group XXVIII] Automatic control of the steam supply to an ejector g drawing air from a vehicle brake system through an automatic feed valve c which remains open below a vacuum less than twenty inches of mercury and closes for a vacuum of or above twenty inches mercury gauge in the system is effected by a governor valve i acting to prevent or allow the passage of steam to the ejector according to whether the vacuum in a reservoir d is about 25 inches or below 20 inches mercury gauge. The valve i is opened against a spring r by reservoir vacuum acting above a diaphragm v to allow access of vacuum through a pipe w to the underside of a diaphragm x to close a valve j in the steam supply line. On reduction of vacuum in the reservoir d the valve i closes, and a vent u is opened allowing access of atmospheric air below the diaphragm x to open the valve j. The automatic feed valve c is opened by the pressure of a spring n and is closed by differential pressure across a diaphragm o ; the pressure at the upper side being that of the train pipe a except during a brake application when the valve c is isolated from the pipe a by the driver's valve b, and the pressure at the lower side being atmospheric except in the full release position of the valve b when it is equal to the train pipe pressure thereby putting the diaphragm o in equilibrium. In a modification a hand-controlled supplementary ejector draws between the valves c and b to exhaust the brake system when desired.
