Abstract

739,475. Fluid-pressure brakes. WESTING- HOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO., Ltd. March 16, 1954 [March 17, 1953], No. 7588/54. Class 103 (1). A known type of triple or distributer valve for fluid pressure railway brakes comprising diaphragms s and S which deflect in accordance with brake pipe pressure to supply or exhaust the brake cylinder is modified by the addition of further diaphragms s<SP>1</SP> and S<SP>1</SP> which give to the valve assembly a variation of brake cylinder pressure with pressure drop in the brake pipe of the kind shown in Fig. 4 as compared with that for the unmodified valve as shown in Fig. 2, which is undesirably steep for operation of the brakes at low cylinder pressures. The space between the two diaphragms S<SP>1</SP> and s<SP>1</SP> is open to atmosphere by port A<SP>1</SP>, the space above the diaphragm s<SP>1</SP> is connected to the control reservoir, and the space under the diaphragm S<SP>1</SP> to the brake cylinder. The normal diaphragms S and s give the valve assembly a characteristic curve as shown by the part 9a. The diaphragms s<SP>1</SP> and S<SP>1</SP> do not have any effect until the brake cylinder pressure is sufficient to overcome the effect of control reservoir pressure acting above s<SP>1</SP>, whereupon they deflect upwardly to engage the main assembly and the brake cylinder against brake pipe pressure variation curve assumes the slope of the part 9b. As shown in Figs. 5 and 6 the valve assembly is modified to vary the braking characteristics according to whether the vehicle is empty or loaded. When the vehicle is loaded the cock 5 is set in the position shown in Fig. 6, in which the space below the diaphragm S<SP>1</SP> is connected to atmosphere through port A<SP>2</SP> and the brake cylinder is connected to the space above a piston 2 which is moved to cut off the auxiliary reservoir RA at a predetermined brake pressure to prevent over-braking of empty or lightly loaded vehicles.
