Abstract
404,296. Fluid-pressure brakes. BROWN, D. F., and WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SAXBY SIGNAL CO., Ltd., 82, York Road, King's Cross, London. July 6, 1932, No. 19121. [Class 103 (i).] Automatic vacuum brakes for railways comprises a supplementary vacuum reservoir adapted to be connected to the lower chamber of the brake cylinder to accelerate release whilst the vacuum train pipe is isolated from the lower chamber and the supplementary reservoir is isolated from the upper and lower chambers during brake application. In brake application, air from the train pipe 10 acts on an abutment 5 to open a valve 6 and admit this air to the lower chamber 8 of the brake cylinder, simultaneously a ball valve 17 is allowed to close the supplementary reservoir 18. On release, when train' pipe and lower chamber pressure has been reduced a predetermined amount a spring 15 closes the valve 6 and opens the valve 17. The brake cylinder is eventually evacuated through a non-return valve 14 and by-pass passage 13. On one side of the abutment 5 exists the pressure in the upper cylinder chamber or the atmosphere. In the latter case the spring is arranged on the right of the abutment 5. The valve 6 may be replaced by an obturator fitting with slight play in a port.
