Abstract
395,771. Fluid-pressure brakes. BROWN, D. F. and WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SAXBY SIGNAL CO., Ltd., 82, York Road, King's Cross, London. Jan. 27, 1932, No. 2521. [Class 103 (i).] In a vacuum brake when train-pipe vacuum is reduced to a predetermined degree to apply the brake, communication between the lower and upper chambers of the brake cylinder 1 is cut off and the upper chamber and a vacuum reservoir 6 are connected, by a valve 17. This valve is controlled by a diaphragm 9 controlled by the vacuum in the train-pipe 8 and in the reservoir 6. On releasing the brakes the valve 17 connects the upper and lower chambers of the brake cylinder through restricted port 20, thus releasing the brakes at a vacuum less than the normal running value. The reservoir 6 is simultaneously cut off from the upper chamber of the brake cylinder. A piston 21 on the stem of valve 17 gradually restricts communication between the chambers of the brake cylinder before this communication is cut off. The reservoir 6 communicates with the trainpipe through the non-return valve 15 of the usual release valve.
