436,988. Vacuum brakes. LECLAIR, L. J., BRACKENBURY, A. G., and WESTING- HOUSE BRAKE & SAXBY SIGNAL CO., Ltd., 82, York Road, King's Cross, London. Aug. 15, 1934, No. 23540. [Class 103 (i)] A local venting valve for vacuum brakes which admits air to the brake cylinder through a filter comprises a valve 17 which opens a large communication between the train pipe and the brake cylinder if the filter becomes choked. The valve 17 also serves the purpose of a non-return valve between the train pipe and brake cylinder through which air is drawn on brake release thus ensuring by frequent operation that it shall not become stuck. The operation of the local venting valve comprising a ball valve 13 operated by a diaphragm 6, is the same as that of the valve described in Specification 431,081. If the filter connected to passage 25 becomes choked, preventing admission of air, on brake application, to chambers 9, 14, 5 and the lower chamber 7 of the brake cylinder the valve 17 is raised by the increased train pipe pressure acting on an annular surface 23 of the valve, thus opening a large passage 21 connecting the train pipe and the brake cylinder. The brake cylinder chamber 7 is evacuated, when the brakes are released, past the valve 17 and a valve 16 and also past a narrow space 24 between the valve 17 and the wall of the chamber 14.
