Abstract

371,341. Fluid-pressure b r a k e s. BROWN, D. F. and WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SAXBY SIGNAL CO., Ltd., 82, York Road, King's Cross, London. Jan. 14, 1931, No. 1322. [Class 103 (i).] Railway vacuum brakes comprise a driver's valve which produces a reduction of vacuum in the train pipe the extent of which depends only upon the interval of time during which the valve is maintained in application position. The driver's valve controls a relay valve 1 comprising a large diaphragm 5, a small diaphragm 10, and a valve 2 controlling an atmospheric opening in the train pipe. In running position the exhauster 14 exhausts the train pipe 3, the application chamber 8 through a cavity 18 in the driver's valve 12, and a chamber 6 below the larger diaphragm 5 of the relay valve 1. A chamber 11 above the smaller diaphragm 10 is connected to atmosphere through ports 22, 23 in the driver's valve. To apply the brakes the driver's valve is moved to connect the ports 19, 22 by a cavity having a restricted atmospheric port which thus connects the chambers 8, 6, 11 to atmosphere and allows the valve 2 to rise and connect the train pipe to atmosphere. The driver's valve can then be moved to lap position in which a further cavity connects ports 19, 22 and isolates the chambers from the atmosphere, and allows the valve 2 to close, or in practice to maintain sufficient opening to balance the fall of pressure produced by the exhauster 14. Increase of train pipe pressure due to leakage causes the valve 2 to close. The brakes may be released in steps by alternatively placing the driver's valve in release position shown in the Figure and the lap position. In emergency position of the driver's valve the train pipe is connected directly to atmosphere by a large port in the driver's valve and the reservoir 8 is also connected to atmosphere by a port in the driver's valve. An emergency valve device may be provided by connecting the chamber 6 to a deadman's valve for admitting air rapidly to this chamber and fully opening the valve 2. A restricted port is then provided between the chamber 6 and the pipe 7.
