Abstract

431,081. Fluid -- pressure brakes. LECLAIR, L. J., BRACKENBURY, A. G., and WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SAXBY SIGNAL CO., Ltd., 82, York Road, King's Cross, London. Feb. 23, 1934, No. 6028. [Class 103 (i)] A vacuum brake quick application valve adapted to admit atmospheric air to the train pipe and brake cylinder, comprises a diaphragm 5 subject on one hand to the vacuum in a chamber 2 connected by a port 3 to the train pipe 10, and on the other hand to the vacuum in a chamber 4 connected to the lower chamber of the brake cylinder by a passage 6, by a port 8 to a chamber 7, and by a port 9 to the train pipe and to which atmospheric air is adapted to be admitted by a valve 13 operated by the diaphragm 5. Admission of air to the train pipe on brake application raises the diaphragm 5 as air enters the chamber 2 below the diaphragm through the port 3 more quickly than it enters the chamber 4 above the diaphragm through ports 8, 9 and the chamber 7. Air is admitted to the brake cylinder through the port 8 and to the train pipe through the port 9. The pressure finally balances on each side of the diaphragm which falls, closing the valve 13. Air now passes from the train pipe to the brake cylinder by ports 9, 8. In order to give an initial rapid flow through the port 9 this port is replaced by a large and a small port, the large port being eventually closed by a valve operated by the pressure in the conduit 10 opposed to atmospheric pressure, or a valve closing the large port is first opened by atmospheric air admitted to the chamber 7 and subsequently closed when the pressure in the train pipe has risen. The diaphragm 5 may be arranged to engage a depending flange surrounding the port 8 and thus close this port, so that at the head of the train where the rise of pressure in the train pipe is rapid the diaphragm will rise sufficiently to close this port and restrict the flow, and at the rear of the train where the rise of pressure is slower the flow will not be so restricted.
