481,314. Fluid - pressure brakes. GRESHAM & CRAVEN, Ltd., GRESHAM, J. N., ARNOLD, C., and MARSH, G. C. Dec. 9, 1936, No. 33800. [Class 103 (i)] In an automatic vacuum brake air is admitted directly from the atmosphere to the brake cylinder on brake application in proportion to the increase in train pipe pressure and a reservoir under high vacuum is connected to the brake cylinder in release by a control fitting comprising valves operated by a single diaphragm, acted on by train pipe and brake cylinder pressure. The chamber t is connected to the train pipe and the chambers d, c<1> to the brake cylinder. Rise of pressure in the chamber t, on brake application raises the diaphragm a which opens the atmospheric valve t admitting atmospheric air to the brake cylinder through the chamber d. This air entering the chamber c<1> through a restricted orifice c acts on the other side of the diaphragm a and recloses the valve f at each stage of the increase in train pipe pressure. Decrease of pressure in the chamber t, on brake release depresses the diaphragm a and opens a valve i to connect a vacuum reservoir connected at m to the brake cylinder by means of a reducing valve n which ensures a less vacuum in the brake cylinder than in the vacuum reservoir. The brake cylinder and reservoir are evacuated through the check valves u, v.
