Abstract
471,271. Fluid - pressure brakes. GRESHAM & CRAVEN, Ltd., and GRESHAM, J. N. April 22, 1936, No. 11476. [Class 103 (i)] A vacuum brake comprises a valve which cuts off the suction air connection between the ejector or ejectors and the train pipe when the driver's valve opens the train pipe to the atmosphere for a brake application. The train pipe is connected to the space o and is evacuated by a large ejector through valves m, k and during running by a small ejector through valves m, n. The driver's handle is mounted on a spindle h which when turned to open a valve p to connect the train pipe to the atmosphere also operates a bell crank t by a cam 3. The bell-crank t by means of a collar u, spring v, sleeve x, and stud y exerts pressure on the valve m to maintain it on its seat, when a full brake application is made. The valve p is provided with a pilot valve q. The top sides of the vacuum brake cylinders of the locomotive and tender are exhausted through passages 5, 6 and a check valve 7. The valve 9 allows this exhaustion from the space o when the brakes are controlled from a second locomotive. The steam supply to the large ejector is cut off when the driver's handle is moved to apply the brakes, by a tappet g<1>.
