Abstract

691,225. Fluid-pressure brakes. WESTING- HOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO., Ltd., and SIMMONS, A. W. Jan. 1, 1952 [March 22, 1951], No. 6866/51. Class 103 (i). The accelerator or quick-service bulb 15 of a distributer valve for fluid pressure braking apparatus is adapted to be charged through a quick-service valve 21 and to exhaust through an auxiliary valve 13 which is opened by the piston 1 of the quick inshot valve when in its uppermost position. The quick service valve 21 is normally kept closed by a spring 27 and may be opened by auxiliary reservoir pressure in chamber 25 on one side of the diaphragm 22 acting in opposition to brake pipe pressure in chamber 23 on the other side of the diaphragm. When a vehicle has been cut out of a train with its brakes applied, there may be sufficient pressure left in the auxiliary reservoir to keep the valve 21 open. Therefore when charging is commenced through the brake pipe, air will be able to escape to atmosphere through passage 20, the quick service bulb 15, choke 18, passages 19, 14, open valve 13 and passage 11 until such pressure is reached that the piston 1 of the quick inshot valve moves down and closes valve 13. To avoid this loss of air during the initial charging period a check valve 16 is inserted between passages 14 and 19, spring-loaded so that it will not open until the brake-pipe pressure has become sufficient to cause the quick inshot valve to close valve 13.
