448,153. Fluid-pressure brakes. BOSCH AKT.-GES., R., 4, Militõrstrasse, Stuttgart, Germany. July 9, 1935, No. 19557. Convention date, July 16, 1934. [Class 103 (i)] In a device for a brake of the two-chamber type or of the type applied by a spring and released by compressed air or vacuum, comprising a member adapted under the influence of the brake pipe pressure to open a valve to admit air to the cylinder to effect rapid application of the brake and in which the member normally leaves open a restricted passage for equalization of the brake pipe and cylinder pressures, the member is adapted to open a wider passage for rapidly charging or exhausting the cylinder in releasing the brake. The device shown is for a vacuum brake. The brake pipe and cylinder are connected at 3, 4 respectively. A control member 16 having the form of a dished metal disc is attached to a rod 13 which normally abuts on an airadmission valve 11. closed by a, spring 15. Between the periphery of the disc and the part 19 of the casing 1 is normally a restricted passage by which air admitted slowly to the pipe 3 for a slow application of the brake passes from chamber 21 to chamber 22 thence to the cylinder. If, however, air is admitted rapidly to the pipe, the disc is moved to the right against a shoulder 20 of the casing and the valve 11 is unseated to admit air to the cylinder through chamber 8 until equilibrium of pressures is established in chambers 21, 22. When the pipe 3 is connected to the source of vacuum, the disc moves to the left against the action of spring 14 to a position adjacent a conical part 24 of the casing so as to 'open a wider passage by which air may flow rapidly from the cylinder to release the brake. The device may be modified for use with compressed air brakes.
