Abstract

1513357 Electropneumatic brakes WERKZEUGMASCHINENFABRIK OERLIKONBUHRLE AG 11 May 1976 [17 July 1975] 19242/76 Heading F2F Apparatus for exhausting the brake pipe 12 of an electropneumatic rail brake comprises an exhaust valve 31 controlled by an electromagnetic valve 19 which is open when energized and which exhaust valve 31 is closed when the electromagnetic valve 19 is open, having a stop valve 26 between the exhaust valve 31 and valve 19 for automatically closing off the brake pipe 12 from exhaust when the pipe has been fully exhausted. In the preferred embodiment the main brake system comprises control reservoir 13, triple valve 10, check valve 17, air pipe 18 and brake pipe 12. As is conventional the pressure in the brake pipe 12 is maintained at a given level when the brakes are released and is reduced by exhausting to apply the brakes. The brake pipe is recharged after an application by opening electromagnetic release valve 20. In the released state electromagnetic valve 19 is open to allow air from the brake pipe into chamber 25 of the stop valve 26 and also into chamber 30 of exhaust valve 31. The air in chamber 25 retains stop valve 26 open against spring 36 to allow air into chamber 44 of exhaust valve 31 to equalize pressures across piston 40 so that spring 43 maintains exhaust valve 31 in a closed position. On receipt of a brake actuation signal electromagnetic valve 19 closes so that chambers 25 and 30 of the stop and exhaust valves are exhausted through hollow tappet 22 of valve 19. However valve 26 remains open as the working pressure still obtains in chamber 37 thereof so air from the brake pipe in chamber 44 is effective to open exhaust valve 31 against spring 43 until the brake pipe pressure has reduced to the point where the pressure in chamber 37 is no longer sufficient to resist spring 36 and valve 26 recloses.
