Abstract

989,063. Fluid pressure brakes combined with an electrodynamic brake. KNORR-BREMSE G.m.b.H. July 25, 1961 [July 26, 1960], No. 26933/61. Heading F2F. A brake installation comprises a compressed air brake, a second brake (not shown) and means for applying the compressed air brake gradually when the breaking of the second brake has fallen below a predetermined value. The installation includes a brake control valve 1 connected to a main air pipe 3, a brake air reservoir 5 and a triple valve 7, the upper chamber 9 of which is separated from a chamber 17 by two spring loaded valves acting one within the other, valve 11, 13 being of large cross-section and valve 21, 23 being of small cross-section to allow only a limited flow of air to the brake cylinder 15. A further chamber 33 is constantly vented and possesses a tubular member 43 which is normally closed in chamber 17 by valve 27, 45 which will not seal valve opening 19. The tubular member is secured to the rod of a spring loaded piston 37 which is connected through pipes 47, 55, a double check valve 49 and an air reservoir 56 to a second valve an electromagnet 61 of which is controlled by the second brake which is of the electrodynamic type. When the second brake is operative pipe 55 and thus piston 37 are vented through the second valve by a port 69 but on actuation of the electromagnet 61 its armature moves sealing the venting pipe against spring loaded valve 65 which is opened allowing compressed air from a line 73 to communicate with and actuate piston 37, closing valves 11, 13 and 21, 23 and opening valve 27, 45. When the second brake's braking action has fallen below a predetermined value the reverse process takes place piston 37 being vented through the second valve, small crosssection valve 21, 23 being opened before valve 11, 13 to allow a gradual increase in pressure in cylinder 15.
